Urban Living on Display at City Hop, June 13, 2009

Columbus has many great events every summer and one of my favorites is City Hop which takes place Saturday, June 13, 2009.

City Hop is a self-guided walking tour of urban real estate in downtown Columbus. I see these buildings every day but going on the tour opens my eyes to the thousands of urbanites living among the sky scrapers. (By definition a sky scraper is a “relatively tall building” or a “building of exceptional height” so I’d say Cbus qualifies as having a sky scraper or two)

When I took the tour a couple years ago I saw some intriguing modern condos. One tall, narrow building on High Street was really interesting. There were few windows (or maybe none now that I think of it) so a chunk of the roof was cut out. Every condo anchored on this section of the building with a glass wall to get some of the natural light. Not sure if it really works but it was really neat.

Among the list of condos on the tour this year are North Bank condos, City View at 3rd, 60 Spring, The Exchange Urban Lofts, Carlyles Watch, Neighborhood Launch, 8 on the Square, The Annex at River South and Ohio Lofts.

To me City Hop is a celebration of living downtown. It seems as if the organizers of this event, Columbus Landmarks Foundation, agree. This year they are incorporating home owners in the events. After a City Hop Kickoff Party on Friday, June 12th, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a Progressive Dinner party from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will be ten downtown locations (see the list on the website) that will showcase private homes to dinner party attendees. This is a great way to get a firsthand account of what it is like to live in the city. Talk about inspiration. If you’ve ever considered living in the city you should be purchasing tickets now!

I’m especially excited for City Hop this year because I’m going to be a volunteer. In these “lean economic times” I’m trying to find ways to keep my social calendar AND my bank account full. I can’t wait to help you and be a part of this event!
